Applied Statistics Conference returns to UP FAMNIT
Between 21-23 September 2026 UP FAMNIT hosted the fourth edition of the Applied Statistics International Conference (AS 2026), which serves as the official annual meeting of the Statistical Society of Slovenia. For over two decades, the conference has represented an important interdisciplinary meeting point for researchers, methodologists, and experts working in the fields of statistics, data science, and their various applications.
Invited lectures by Distinguished Experts
A key component of this year's program was two invited lectures by internationally recognized experts.
Prof. Dr. Paula Brito from the University of Porto (Portugal) presented a lecture titled Parametric sparse models for distributional data, while Prof. Dr. Georg Heinze from the Medical University of Vienna (Austria) gave a talk titled The Firth correction – a recap and new developments.
A three-day scientific and professional program
The conference program offered a rich selection of scientific content along with opportunities for exchanging cutting-edge scientific insights and practical knowledge. The main portion of the conference, held between September 21 and 22, featured an extensive program of peer-reviewed oral and poster presentations alongside invited talks by distinguished experts. The final day was primarily dedicated to an in-depth exploration of methodological knowledge, learning modern statistical software tools, and presenting practical applications of statistical methods.
AS 2026 thus continues the tradition of connecting diverse subfields of statistics. Indeed, statistical methods play a crucial role across many domains, including the social sciences, biomedicine, economics, engineering, data science, and artificial intelligence.
As noted by conference organizer Asst. Prof. Dr. Ana Zalokar from the Department of Mathematics at UP FAMNIT, this interdisciplinary focus is one of the event's defining aspects: "This is the fourth time we are hosting the Applied Statistics conference here at FAMNIT, bringing together researchers from various fields of statistics—ranging from social, mathematical, and official statistics to biostatistics—as well as from data science and artificial intelligence."
Once again, the AS 2026 conference provided a platform for connecting domestic and international researchers, facilitating the exchange of knowledge on modern statistical methods and their applications.
